When he was 36 years old, Squire was told by his doctor that he had the worst heart he had ever seen in a man of his age. Squire worked as an auto mechanic, for the 7-up bottling company in Winston-Salem, and at Stokes Motor Dealership in King. In later years, they farmed.
Hessie worked at Reynolds Tobacco Company when she was only a teenager. She quit when she was married. She worked at the Carbon Plant in Winston-Salem during WWII. In later years, her husband Squire was often sick, so Hessie had to work outside their home. After Squire died, she lived with their daughter Eunice and looked after her children while she worked. Eunice's husband died while young in an automobile accident.
The Great Depression hit Hessie & Squire hard. Squire was out of work and they had no place to live. Squire's sister Minnie and her husband (Sid Smith) had a farm at Clemmons, NC. They let Squire & Hessie live there and tend the farm.
When Donis' husband Allen Brandon went to war, he asked Hessie & Squire to come and live with Doris while he was gone. They did so, and when Allen returned, he helped them build a house beside theirs. It was the first house they ever owned. After Squire died, Hessie rented the home for awhile, then moved back in — and she died there in her "little house".
